Faced with a sluggish economy and scarce employment opportunities, the women of Gaza take on hard labor in an effort to earn a living and provide for their families.
One group has signed up to work as ditch-diggers to help support their families. “The work is very hard,” says Umm Ahmed. “But life is even harder.” These women are their families’ breadwinners.
And with two out of three people unemployed in Gaza the burden of responsibility on their shoulders is heavier than the shovels in their hands.
